Piano Instructor / Singer and Jazz Pianist
Jeannine holds a Piano Pedagogy Degree from the College of Mount Saint Joseph where she studied Piano with Atarah Jablonsky, a well- known educator who has numerous accolades. Music History and Theory studies were with Rev. Angelo Della Picca, a prolific composer who appears in the Who’s Who of American Classical Music and whose doctorate is in Sacred Music. While earning her degree, won awards for Academic Merit, taught Piano in the college’s Community Music Center, and tutored fellow students in Theory.
In addition to Classical piano, Jeannine studied “Popular” piano with Frank Wolff who taught her solo piano stylings for lounges and restaurants. Phil DeGreg , one of the world’s best Jazz pianists taught her Jazz chord voicings and occasionally Jeannine sings with Phil and his trio.
During her college years, Jeannine also taught piano for Buddy Roger’s Music store where she won several teaching awards for excellence, including “Teacher of The Year. “ After being selected for training by the Yamaha Corporation, Jeannine was head of the Music Instruction division of Willis Music where she taught group piano lessons to classes ranging from age 4 to adult. Henderson Music stores sponsored the Yamaha Clavinova Festivals for piano students. Jeannine conducted the keyboard ensembles during rehearsals and Emceed the show, featuring 24 Clavinova instruments being played all at once in these “monster concerts.”
Later Jeannine conducted the Handbell Choir, and was assistant to the Parish Music Minister of St Ignatius church and school. Jeannine also played and sang Masses. She retired from this position when her performance schedule became more demanding as her bands were working often.
The Jeannine Groh Trio, Quartet and Quintet has been heard at many of the finest Tri –State venues, including the prestigious Horseshoe Casino ( now called Hard Rock) in the elegant steakhouse, the Diamond Lounge, and the Ballrooms. Also a Jazz singer, Jeannine has played solo performances.
Although Jeannine’s groups often play the “Great American Songbook” classics of the Big Band Swing era, Jeannine loves to perform Latin Jazz and some Pop as well. Her performance career also included Top 40- Rock / Pop/ Dance bands. She began performing gigs as early as age 12 with her parents group. Her dad was a Jazz Harmonica player, and her mom a cocktail set drummer and both sang well.
With all of these performance and teaching experiences, Jeannine is competent teaching many different styles of music, and has many ” tricks of the trade” and tools to teach any Piano student. One of her students who was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study in Stuttgart, Germany will have the position of organist for the American Cathedral in Paris for the year and has won many international competitions.
